Can someone help me get desktop effects to work on linux mint? - desktop specials

Whenever I try to still allow normal desktop Linux Mint Special Effects (Gloria), he can not do. I tried it on Ubuntu and got the same answer that I am currently on a Sony Vaio VGN-nw130j laptop with a 4570-series ATI Mobility Radeon HD. They also have an Intel Core 2 Duo. if someone can help that would be great.
